Modes of discussion:
forum
panel discussion
more intimate meeting with the key players

Research:
Ethics - Why is it hidden? Why so much difficulty to document / record / present what happens? Conversely, why so much effort to hide / secure killing facilities?
Pain / suffering of animals
Social / psychological effects on those in slaughter and related industry. Exploitation of very poor and immigrant people
Environmental consequences - highly concentrated operations for most animal flesh and secretions lead to water and land pollution, viral and bacterial development among sick, depressed and diseased animals.
Human health - antibiotic and similar products administered frequently diminish effectiveness for humans and other animals.

Some points of consideration from Shanah:

Who should be there to create a truly balanced discussion? What are we trying to decide on? How would we know we've been successful? We have many interns interested in food who could research the goals of similar student groups on other campuses? Perhaps at the very least we need to ask DaSpot to show us the receipts for free-range, organic chicken for our BBQ?

Interestingly, at our last HUB meeting we decided to create goals around campus food, yet we didn't know what to focus on so we decided to discuss at our next meeting.

Our stance on presenting dietary choices that include humanely treated, organic, free range meat was determined in 2007 by the first group of Hub members and while I was a vegan myself. Yet there is no reason that we can't revisit and open this dialogue againof as we determine our goals
All the best,
Shanah
