Earthquake jolts Big Island
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the Big Island at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, Hawaii County Civil Defense said. The quake did not generate a tsunami. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was located five miles south southwest of Keanakolu in the Hamakua District, 7 miles east northeast of the Mauna Kea summit and 20 miles west northwest of Hilo. West Hawaii residents reported feeling the temblor as well. The quake was about 19 miles below the surface.

Waikoloa fire contained, still burning The 400-plus acre brush fire near Waikoloa was contained but not under control Monday afternoon, West Hawaii Battalion Chief Dennis Iyo said. Wind, weather and temperature conditions were preventing firefighters from completely extinguishing the blaze, he said.
